Unpopular Opinion: Words Don't Actually Hurt
Unless you're a child and just beginning to learn about your sense of self, emotional resilience and what constitutes opinion versus fact than words don't actually hurt. There I said it. Call me an asshole if you like but I will redirect you to my previous statement. Your opinion doesn't matter to me and your words and just that...fucking words.
We all need to give our collective heads a fucking shake. How often does someone get butt hurt because another person made a slightly politically incorrect statement that was meant with no malicious intent. Can we all just agree that political correctness was a shit idea? Can we please get back to being able to speak in clear and direct ways instead of the constant pandering to others' feelings. Are we going to get to the point where all we do is speak in subliminal messaging? This shit needs to stop.
Here's a fun fact. Throughout my life and my athletic career I have probably been called more names than most people. I've been called things that at that current moment I didn't even know the definition to. You know what affect it has had on me.....zero. I was raised under the pretense that sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. When the fuck did that change? When did words and feelings become the ultimate currency. Just stop it.
Now I'm not condoning that we all go out and speak with the intent to harm. I'll restate that. I don't condone hatred and malicious intent towards anyone. If you are attempting to hurt someone than you should probably get punched in the face (I'll leave that for another post). However, if someone else's opinion differs from your and you get all weepy, emotional and triggered then you need to re-evaluate your emotional intelligence. Here's a fact, as long as you don't believe in it yourself than that shit doesn't matter.
Here's some perspective for you. I'll give you a few examples of things that are actually hurtful...Ready? Watching a loved one fight an incurable disease, the death of a child, war, starvation, torture, slavery, sexual exploitation. See a difference there? Maybe someone telling you that your taste in music is shitty isn't actually that big of a deal. Just maybe.
The psychologist Jordan Peterson stated "that in order to speak is to risk offense." Are we that fearful of risking offense anymore that we aren't even expressing ourselves honestly? That seems like a slippery slope to me. If we get to the point that we no longer express ourselves unless it aligns with a popular narrative than we risk being a very easily manipulated population. Maybe that's the point of this current trend and maybe it needs to stop.
Again, while I don't support the outright expression of hatred towards another. I think this entire words hurt narrative has gone too far. I think we all need to take a look in the mirror and evaluate what we actually find offensive and what we've been told we need to be outraged about. If not we risk being a mindless, drone population that is overly afraid of honest expression.
I'd also like to state that if reading this makes you think I'm an asshole and you want to express that to me...cool, by all means go ahead. Just know that I get to make the final decision about whether that matters to me or not...see it's not that difficult now is it.
